Hmmmm - can I handle 4th- and 5th-graders?

Last night someone at church asked me if I would be willing to be a catechist for the 4th- and 5th-grade boys. I'm not really sure if she really meant to be asking me, or if she thought I was David*, or if she is just desperate and asking every able-bodied male in the church.

My first internal reaction was "no way." But I told her I'd think about it, so I'm trying to keep an open mind about it for a while...

*People at church love David, partly because he is a therapist who works with children. When people ask me what I do, and I tell them, I usually get a polite, "Oh, that's nice," or something like that. But when people ask David, and learn that he is a therapist, and that he does "play therapy", then they all want to have a 20-minute conversation with him about it. And it still seems that a few people at church can't remember which of us is which. :)

Ha, you couldn't pay me enough to teach/deal with children.

On the other hand, I have no idea whether you can handle children. It generally requires a drill sergeant attitude, unless you are someone blessed with The Touch. Do you really want to have to be a drill sergeant?

Oh, I don't think I'd have to be a drill sergeant.

Actually, I'm not sure it's the children which give me pause. Maybe it's just the idea of the responsibility...

Hey Brian, I just learned about your blog. Yes, I meant to ask you. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is really quite deep theologically and needs to be led by someone who is a student and loves kids. I call it EFM without homework. Last year as we began to talk about the Hebrew Scriptures we talked about the different redactorsL J, P, D, and the one I've forgotten. Catechesis is about asking questions that lead children to finding their own understand of a loving God and what all of lives will be like when "God will be all in all." You don't have to be a drill sargeant. Oops, I don't have a blogger account and don't want to lose this, so I'll be anonymous. Kaki
